Cashbox Canada Celebrated March Music Madness at CMW

Cashbox Canada Celebrated March Music Madness at CMW

Cashbox Canada kicked of March Music Madness on Wednesday, March 21st with an excellent night of live performances at Toronto's Orbit Room. Chelsey is handled by Deborah Wood Publicity and you will be hearing new product from her very soon.

The event was a busy one but Saturday was probably the best for Cashbox, with our CEO Bill Delingat walking the floors, mingling with old and new friends, Photographer Michelle Foran collecting on-site celebrity images, which you can see in our Photo Gallery and Ian Robertson, leader and singer from Ruthless Ones helped out on tech support.

The evening was put together by Toronto-based Irene Carroll Et Associates – I SEE and Vancouver RockitGirl Media, Kit Watson.

Don recently wrote a song about bullying for another Cashbox favourite, Drake Jensen, who couldn't be on hand as he was writing and pre-producing in Nashville. The acts reflected the diversity of Canadian music with Country crooner, Punk girl, and Folk/Rock cuties, and somehow it all made sense.

It was a whirlwind of a week and the excellent part for Cashbox Canada was reconnecting with our friends and fans.

Talent coming to Smith Center as dazzling as the building

Talent coming to Smith Center as dazzling as the building

Half a billion dollars can pay for a lot. , who also happened to be Holmes' performing idol. For nearly six years, the showcase has drawn cast members from the best Vegas production shows to such off-Strip venues as the since-closed Suede Restaurant (in the same complex as Double Down Saloon), Liberace Museum, Creative Studios, and Garfield's Restaurant in Summerlin. The allure has been that guests — many of them the entertainers themselves — can be treated to top-level performances of artists performing original numbers at a cost of … about nothing. The cover has for years been $10; seating has been open. He has performed at all variety of Las Vegas venues, including the lounge at Stirling Club at Turnberry Place, Artemus Ham Hall and the showroom at Harrah's, where he headlined for five years through 2006.

Thus, Holmes knows the arts-and-entertainment scene in Las Vegas.

At Smith Center, that figure has been doubled. Some of the informal vibe that made Composers Showcase popular will dissipate, no doubt, and the series is starting on a month-to-month basis. Holmes is also friendly with a range of performers, from lounge musicians to members of the Las Vegas Philharmonic. He plans to invite the best vocalists and players in the city to join him in his weekend performances, and he hopes to fold in a regular "gypsy" show, a midnight performance on Saturdays staged exclusively for local entertainers.

As in: What is in it for us?

For this night crawler, that conversation starts at Cabaret Jazz. It keeps the beat.

If the Composers Showcase can take hold at Smith Center, and becomes "a cool hang," to use Holmes' term, guests will be more likely to buy tickets to book other performances at Cabaret Jazz or at Reynolds Hall.

It hasn't helped that one of the venues in the original plans, a 300-500-seat theater that would have been perfect for local arts groups, was erased in favor of the Discovery Children's Museum.

The great appeal for locals at Reynolds Hall — aside from its breathtaking, multitiered design and peerless acoustics — is its "Broadway Las Vegas" series. Martin says the strong ticket sales (more than 10,500 season subscribers) of the "Broadway Las Vegas Series," which includes "The Color Purple," "Memphis" "Million Dollar Quartet," "Mary Poppins," and "Wicked," was evidence that the city is ready to support shows and reverse a trend that saw "Avenue Q" and "Spamalot," (both at Wynn Las Vegas) and "Hairspray" sink in Las Vegas.

Las Vegans will note that the Smith Center has drawn quite a few artists who typically performed at the UNLV Performing Arts Center.

But what happens when those stars disperse, and the instruments and cameras are packed and hauled away? Those who have not yet had the chance to experience either the majestic Reynolds Hall or the cozily hip Cabaret Jazz club are already asking for the skinny on the Smith Center venues. But as that show's short run (just six weeks) helped reinforce, Broadway-styled productions have not always been an easy sell in Vegas.

Helming the show will be Neil Patrick Harris, a performer with such appeal and multidimensional skills that it is a shame he is not headlining his own permanent show in Vegas.

That collection of stars, and the range it represents, could populate a series of performances at the Smith Center.

Billionaires Of The Music Business 2012

Billionaires Of The Music Business 2012

Guy Laliberte is the wealthiest fire-breather in the world, and he's getting even richer.

Though Branson is now more focused on other industries—space exploration, for example—he's one of the few billionaires who actually got his start in the music. Judging by the combined sale price of EMI's recorded music and publishing divisions for $4. 1 billion months later, he's already gotten a solid return on his investment. 1 billion and should see his fortune surge even higher after Facebook goes public this spring.

Then there's Sean Parker, who's looking to fix the very music industry he nearly destroyed with Napster in 1999 as investor and board member or Spotify.

Parker and most of the other names on this list made the bulk of their fortunes outside of music, but a whole new crop of music moguls may one day join them as billionaires. For example: Google co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page, who launched a music service earlier this year; they're now competing with a similar product from billionaire Jeff Bezos' Amazon.

Russian-American industrialist Len Blavatnik bought his way into the business, snagging Warner Music for $3.

"Live music is going great, radio stations will always continue to do well," said Richard Branson, whose V Festival is among Europe's biggest music events, in an interview with me last fall. , London's O2 and Shanghai's Mercedes-Benz Arena. 7% more than last year. The increase in Laliberte's fortune can be partially traced to music—more specifically, the success of Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour, a joint venture with the Jackson estate. He fills his halls with his own in-house entertainment, including Usher, Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift and the Black Eyed Peas.

On the live music side, Philip Anschutz owns AEG, the second-largest live music company in the world.

Laliberte isn't part of the music business in the traditional sense—he doesn't own a record label or a publishing company—but he's one of a handful of moguls on our recently-released Billionaires list benefiting from the increasing the importance of music.

Faire offers food, fun and workshops

Faire offers food, fun and workshops

The 10th annual Scottish Irish Faire at the Horseshoe this weekend offers workshops, entertainment and Celtic wares and food.

"MTS has been compared to a Scottish version of The Pogues, with folk, rock, punk and ska influences in the music," stated . Pretty high energy. You get more musicians and more vendors and more workshops and that attracts more fairgoers. We have added a headliner group so we have two headliners -- Jiggernaut and Murder the Stout out of Houston.

"Every year we try as a group to gain more interest," said Raney. The latter is a Celtic rock band.

Animal activities include a McBassett Celtic Dog Parade and a Celtic Breed Parade.

"Jiggernaut's music is a confident, brash, fiery mix of Scottish and Irish influences and American blue-collar stadium rock.

This year, Raney said, "We have added some animal acts. It's really just a good time. Most of the entertainers are returning.

Formed in 2004, Murder the Stout (MTS) is led by native Scotsman High Morrison on lead vocals and squeezebox.

Around 15 clans are represented at this annual event.

Vendors will be on hand with all types of Celtic items: clothing, Irish wools and linens, jewelry, musical instruments, toys, art, military reproductions, family and clan histories and crests, Celtic figurines and Celtic foods.

Formed in 2000, Jiggernaut is a combination of Celtic, rock and folk music. When the fairgoers come, there's better finances to get more vendors and entertainers and workshops.

Jugglers, magic, music, sword-swallowers

Jugglers, magic, music, sword-swallowers

Teddy Roosevelt rode into the sunset long before the Flying Karamasov Brothers burst on the scene.

The parts are legion. Blending time-honored circus acts with the zaniness of vaudeville, Chautauqua's ensemble of critically acclaimed performers will keep you in stitches, on the edge of your seat and tickle the fancy of even the most stubborn inner child. ".

"This is one of the most creative and fun-loving groups of people you'll ever meet," said Bellingham's Karl Meyer, a theatrical triple-threat in his own right.

Its performance in Friday Harbor is one of the group's benefit shows.

"We'll have three of the touring guys with us and possibly even one of the originals (Tim Furst) for the show," Meyer said of FKB's Friday Harbor lineup.

"They were always an extraordinary experience," Pipia said of those shows.

Settle in and expect the unexpected. Each two-hour performance includes acrobats, jugglers, magicians, sword-swallowers, tap dancers, musicians and a whole good deal of clowning around.

While the show is largely about entertainment, New Old Time Chautauqua was born some 30 years ago with a broader mission in mind.

America's "best" has been reborn.

That mission was one of the reasons Joey Pipia, the show's resident magician and "delusionist", joined up. There's a synchronicity there.

The show's producer and president of the NOTC board, Meyer is also a Flying Karamasov "cousin", filling in from time to time when a "brother" might be absent.

Zebo celebrates five years at Evil Olive

Zebo celebrates five years at Evil Olive

The concept of being a DJ's DJ is about as tired a cliché as someone pantomiming record scratching when referencing the art form. Traversing multiple managerial and lineup changes that until recently included Marco Morales, a partner in Zebo's Hot Dog Records, Gust has surefire an invaluable musical ally for the club. "Being that it's a four o'clock spot, the only options were Nick's, where you could hang out with the jukebox, or go to Ohm and pay a ridiculous cover and possibly not get in. " Gust's night offered a more eclectic late-night party. That reputation remains. "He's a hometown hero with the best head of hair. " It's a difficult thing for a DJ to have his fingers in that many pies without confusing club owners and promoters, but Zebo's rise has been a steady one. Since migrating from underground loft parties in '04, where he focused on the rave side of drum 'n' bass and house, Zebo's taken part in reggae nights, fashion-forward disco revues and opening sets for marquee names in hip-hop, dubstep and house. It's this broad outlook that makes Gust the best fit for Columbia's DJ courses, a curriculum that he experienced as a student there in '99. "My teacher got me into thinking outside of the box," he says. That was really what got Evil Olive going as an entire," he says. "I love pushing quality music in Chicago and I feel that it's important that we have DJs of substance in our city," he says. Looking such as the new millennium twist on a '50s greaser with a dirty-blond pompadour, handlebar mustache and a jigsaw puzzle of tattoos—including "true love" inked across his fingers—a humble Gust points to the Booty Up as the origin of Evil Olive's hold on Wicker Park nightlife. "We really don't cater to a Top 40 vibe. "I was noticing, all these jungle tracks with these reggae samples that I love, those came from somewhere; these house tracks with these loops, those were disco samples that came from somewhere. " Now he works to instill this same drive and thirst for new sounds into his students. Pr3-Frosh, the Booty Up has been Gust's main party outlet in the city. What DJ can't admire that level of versatility? Voted best local DJ by the Chicago Reader the past two years—and hoping for a hat trick in 2012—Johnathon "Zebo" Gust's skill and music expertise have scored him a position at Columbia College, where he teaches Club DJ classes to a brand new generation of dance-music lovers. They've also landed him at Wicker Park late-night mecca Evil Olive, where his Friday-night residency the Booty Up marks five years of steamy dance mayhem on Friday 9. It would range from classic hip-hop to new dance, electro and banger house. "I wish to see Chicago have a good reputation.

Ballot to Wiggle receives full support

DANDENONG North Primary School students have experienced a major case of The Wiggles this week. Dandenong North Primary School teacher Kevin MacKay said the tickets were going to kids who wouldn't otherwise be able to go. "A good deal of these children have never had the money or life that gave them music for fun or CDs or DVDs for leisure due to the what they've been through, their life has been one of survival. "I work with the newly arrived women along with their children," she said. " She said she didn't think these kids should miss out. "I thought these kids are missing out because of money and distance, and so, yeah, it achieved an aim," she said. "We have quite a huge number of students in that category so we had a ballot, and drew names out," he said.

NEW YORK - How much drinking kids and teens had seen in recent movies was linked to the chances they overdid it on alcohol themselves in a whole new study from six European countries. "Parents actually knowing where their child is on a Saturday night. In the surveys, they checked off which of 50 different box office hits they'd seen on lists that included a total of more than 600 films popular between 2004 and 2009 in the different countries. For all of those movies, researchers went through the films and counted how many times characters were shown drinking alcohol. Instead, there are other things they can do to cut in decline on the chance youngsters will commence drinking — including not getting drunk themselves, and setting firm but reasonable house rules. "I don't think on the basis of this study you can say (to parents) that exposure to alcohol will improve the chance of their child drinking," said Lesley Smith, who has studied teen drinking at Oxford Brookes University in the UK, but wasn't involved in the new study. "Current evidence suggests that there may be a link, but a lot more research needs to be done to try to tease out what are the components" that affect that link, she told Reuters Health. Reiner Hanewinkel from the Institute for Therapy and Health Research in Kiel, Germany, and his colleagues gave surveys to more than 16,000 students at public schools in Germany, Iceland, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland and Scotland. Students were between 10 and 19 years old, with most on the younger end of that range. Hanewinkel's team then compared students' on-screen alcohol exposure with how many of them reported ever binge drinking — defined as having five or more drinks on a single occasion. " Thomas Wills, from the University of Hawaii Cancer Center in Honolulu, agreed. "I think partly it's seeing very attractive, cool people modeling the behavior," said Wills, who has also studied the effects of alcohol on the big screen but wasn't involved in the new research. Eighty-six percent of the films had at least one scene with booze. In total, 27 percent reported binge drinking at some point. The researchers found a consistent link: 10 to 20 percent of participants with some of the lowest movie-related alcohol exposure had binged themselves, compared to about 40 percent who had seen the most scenes with alcohol, according to findings reported on March 5 in the journal Pediatrics. "Parents can do a lot themselves. That's something that gets lost. "Kids go see a movie — they do not walk out of the movie theater saying, 'I'll go take a drink,'" he told Reuters Health. "But a week later, a month later, the influence might still be there. " The fact that the researchers looked across six countries with very different alcohol policies and social norms suggests that culture may not explain the link between what teens see on the big screen and their own drinking, Hanewinkel added. Still, Smith said that the current findings shouldn't make parents extra concerned about what movies their kids are watching. While the study couldn't show whether movie-viewing came before kids started binge drinking, Hanewinkel said he suspects a cause-and-effect link is at least partly to blame.

Concert raises $132000 for hall

Funds for the Queenstown Memorial Hall upgrade are past halfway after Saturday night's Reach Out entertainment event raised $132,000. "It's a real boost for the cause. We're really delighted. " Organisers had expected to increase up to $10,000 in total, but were pleasantly surprised to see ticket sales and cash over the bar had raised that alone. Memorial Hall committee chairwoman Cath Gilmour said this had shown huge generosity and she was impressed by the community support throughout the evening. Host for the evening and member of the Memorial Hall committee Steven Wilde said the night had an entire community feel and he was pleased to see everyone had enjoyed themselves. "Everyone had a good time. The biggest announcement of the evening was the $100,000 contribution from the Peter Wilding Estate. Another $17,000 came from table pledges and $5000 from Henry and Caroline van Asch. Patrons were treated to a musical treat by the quartet, who have performed all over New Zealand, and together, through the years.

Step back on time to when disco ruled the world

Step back on time to when disco ruled the world

Imagine being a doorman at the height of the disco era standing outside Studio 54 in New York. With a dutiful nod to Northern Soul, disco emerged glittering on to the stage and, for the next few years, it could do no wrong. But it ended up as an object of ridicule: "People taking Jethro Tull seriously and heaping scorn on the Bee Gees. " Fan Mark Moore, of S'Express, showed us through his disco album record collection, which included such delights as Sesame Street Fever; and even Ethel Merman got in on the act with a disco "interpretation" of her Broadway hits. "It was ours. Quite right, too. A sample of this is cut mercifully short. The man who created I Feel Love with Ms Summer admits: "Sometimes I think I could sue the whole world. Disco proved the perfect fodder for the rising women's lib movement, Donna Summer's "anthem to sex" Love To Love You Baby – complete with its 17 minutes of moaning – and free love, with some eye-opening tales from Nile Rodgers, who seemed to have a very good time in the Studio 54 ladies' toilets. " Before you may warble the first bar of You Should Be Dancin', this programme had you pulled into a world of gay America in the early 1970s and also the birth of club culture. For a bloke who has been sampled so often, he need to be a millionaire, Giorgio Moroder is not bitter.

But that was The Joy of Disco (BBC 4, 9pm). John Travolta's Saturday Night Fever dance coach, Deney Terrio popped up to show us all how to do that dance and reminisce about taking Travolta clubbing in the late '70s: "He was like Fred Astaire. Some of it was, admittedly, plain bizarre, like the silver catsuit-crossed-with-outer-space look sported by Labelle for Lady Marmalade, and others baffling: a no 1 record made by porn star Andrea True, who sang More More More. I bet I wasn't the only one who watched it tapping along and singing. "I honestly thought she was talking about the music," sighs her producer.

Other entertainers echoed similar sentiments.

We are strong. I'm pretty sure we are going to have our best season ever," Mayor Raeanne Presley said.

"Branson is open and if you come here, you'll have an ideal vacation," he said.

Patrickaygood said the family has received an "overwhelming amount of support" from the community.

"I was at our theater by 2:30 a.

That was the message Thursday evening from the Live Music Capital of the World as entertainers and officials representing Branson's 50-plus theaters gathered together for a press conference in front of theughes Brothers Theatre on 76 Country Boulevard.

State Division of Tourism Director Katie Steele Danner, a Branson-area native, pledged state support of the Branson area.

Officials noted that traffic is open on 76 and there are no restrictions on any travelers attempting to get to Branson's theaters.

The Pitch: Cube, Charles Khabouth's newest club

Cube is the name of the latest nocturnal adventure from Charles Khabouth, the city's foremost purveyor of nightclubs and bars. "Five years ago, we might not have played electronic music, but now electronic music is huge," says Khabouth, adding that Cube has the finest sound system and LED video screen anywhere in town. 2. Cube, however, is pricey, as well as the 16 booths, each with their own server and bus boy, should keep bottle-service devotees comfortable in the finest luxury money affords. " 3. "La Société is affordable, here may not be," says Khabouth, comparing his newest club to his newest restaurant, the Bloor Street bistro bringing French comfort food to the masses. "I don't put stock in someone showing up in a shiny suit," says Khabouth, adding that Cube's mix is its magic and that you don't need to be a Bay Street tycoon to show up and dance. "I don't want 19-year-olds; we're 25-plus," Khabouth says. I'm 50, and I'd like to come here. "Nobody's doing brass like this any more," says Khabouth, showing off the fixtures in his retro-themed, '70s-styled club. 4. W. "I'm searching for a cool, sophisticated audience. 1. According to Khabouth, design elements such as the 65-foot-long bar and handblown brass railings and sculptures give his new disco more of a Las Vegas feeling than what's typically found at King and John. "People will qualify themselves; we want clients who are cool and wish to have fun.

She says the audience will find Bowman and Kuniak "top-notch, seasoned performers.

Miss Pennsylvania, Juliann Sheldon, will serve as a judge and also speak to the audience and present theall of Fame Star award.

In Syracuse, Bowman hosted a daily children's television program.

There still are some people who are surprised that the TV weatherman also is a ventriloquist, Bowman says.

Sponsored by Allegheny Valley School District's Alumniall of Fame, the evening "for kids of all ages" provides a fast-paced, full program of entertainment to benefit scholarships for Springdale Junior-Seniorigh School students.

e enjoys participating in events like Springdale's.

Three characters, including his dummy Chester Drawers, will accompany him through jokes, stories and songs, including a retelling of the classic "Who's On First" routine, originated by the comedy team of Abbott and Costello.

The show includes performances by the Rainbow Kids from the Afterschool Buddy program; KDKA TV weatherman Dennis Bowman, a master ventriloquist; magician-illusionist Dan Kuniak; and the five acts that made it to the live talent finals of the firstall of Fame Star competition, which began Feb.

Where: Marshall Auditorium, Springdaleigh School, 501 Butler Road, Springdale

Admission: $10 adults; $5 students

Details: 724-274-5300

It will only seem like a cast of thousands at "March Magic! A Musical, Magical Celebration for Kids" on Friday at Springdaleigh School.

She left her 28-year commercial television career, which included jobs at WTAE and WPXI, to found the company.

"We felt Juliann was an ideal guest for a show that is not just to entertain, but also to inspire and motivate more young people to get involved in the arts as a healthy outlet for their passion, energy and emotions," says organizer Susan Brozek-Scott, a member of the school district's Alumniall of Fame.

Kuniak of Frazer enjoys sharing a bill with Bowman. "Magic has the amazing capability to be presented in so many different ways that it can appeal to any audience.

Brozek-Scott, a former environmental reporter, also performs in character as the instructive environmentalist Aunt Junk, a colorful redhead who raps and dances on stage with a giant costume character dog, Jake Poodles, and Manny Cat.

She also formed the Rainbow Kids, a multicultural, singing/dancing/acting performancegroup comprised of children ages 7 to 15.

Variety act of comedy and song

Variety act of comedy and song

F orty years ago in Rodway School, John Hegley and his first band were stopped from performing at his school disco. He then became a bus driver, working the Staple Hill to Bedminster Route in 1973. "I don't think Bristol has changed much, though," he muses. "The bus station looks a bit different but the rest stays the same. He has since written several best- selling volumes of poetry, ranging from the surreal through the humorous to the personal and emotional. His most recent role is as poet in residence at John Keats' house in Hampstead, London, and despite the length of his career he is always writing new material. "The thing with poems is that they are very resilient. I've been doing a great deal of writing about John Keats – he went to Rome, so I've been thinking about that, although I don't think he went to Bristol. "There was always a surprise with Steve as well as the Demolition Decorators. " John Hegley appears at The Croft on Wednesday, March 14. Tel 0870 4444400. " His first poetry collection, Visions of the Bone Idol (Poems about Dogs and Glasses) was published to critical acclaim in 1984. Audiences lining up to see him at The Croft have been warned to expect the unexpected. He says: "I got involved with this club night because I know Steve, who is running it, from way back when he was in a band called the Demolition Decorators. They were an adventurous, experimental group and so I should probably try something in that vein. " When I tell him that Club TGV originally appeared in a seedy bohemian corner of London with the motto that "anything goes – as long as it's good" he seemed undeterred. Instead, he tells me it will be the first time anyone will be ready to hear all of his train material. "It should be good, he said. " Lean, suited and bespectacled, the wry wordsmith has thrilled audiences across the UK with his unique and innovative gigs. My part will be experimental but I'm not sure about adventurous. " John's performances typically include the whole range of his talents, with some music, comedy and poetry. "I had written some serious poems when I was younger and so it all seemed to fit together. I'm coming back again in April to do some poetry readings with my sister Angela at Yate Library. "I'm very pleased at the name of this latest night though because to me, TGV means French trains. "I like it when I take something small, like the felt tip in my hand, and will make it into something bigger about what that felt tip can do. "For the audience I think a selection show always provides a bit more and is better than just one act. " Although John was born in London, he sat his A-levels in Mangotsfield when his father retired to Bristol. He will also be at Yate Library with Angela Arnold on Friday, April 20. "There will be some poems, some will be jolly, some melancholy, some about folly, but I don't know if I'll require a brolly. "I also heard someone doing a poem and a spoof version of it. I thought it was really good and so I thought about doing my own version.
