Colourful celebrations planned
Jubilee events in north Northumberland at a glance. The main event in Berwick will be the jubilee party on the grassed area at The Parade (outside Berwick Barracks) on Monday, June 4. Entries will have to be delivered to the Town Hall on time for judging at 11am, and will be on display from 1pm to 2. Following this there will be a tea dance until 5pm, with free entry but proceeds from tea and coffee being donated to Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research. Organiser Lorna Chappell said: "We are sure this'll be a fun day, and if it's a success we'll make Berwick's own show an annual event. "We know there are some brilliant cooks, flower arrangers and artists in the Berwick area, and we have chosen categories perfect for young and old so there should be something for everybody. The street party will be a brilliant community event which will be an excellent way of raising money and awareness. Michael Richardson of Berwick Rotary Club added: "We have supported Leukaemia tertainment, live music and a family barbecue. Berwick will also have its own 'village show' when residents can show off their skills at baking, handicrafts and flower arranging - all with a jubilee theme. Helen is now in remission and a group of family and friends set up the group to increase funds for blood cancer research taking place in Newcastle and throughout the UK. Helen said: "We are involved in this event because raising money for Leukaemia tandard or not. There will also be a tea dance from 2. There will also be children's entertainers, face painting, a magician and much more. Towns and villages have turned red, white and blue in anticipation of what promises to be a great occasion. 15pm, climaxing with the lighting of the jubilee beacon at Windmill Bastion on the Elizabethan ramparts. The beacon will be lit by the winner of the first schools competition to draw a picture of the Queen, with the very best entries being displayed in the marquee. It has been organised by Berwick Rotary Club and Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, with support from Berwick Town Council. "This weekend offers us all a rare chance to celebrate together, whether in local street parties or at one of the bigger events around town. There will be three marquees: a beer tent, a traditional tea/coffee tent with cakes, scones and sandwiches, and a live music tent. It is completely free and aimed at both young and old so there is sure to be something for everyone. |
