Swift gives $4M for children's music centre
Swift gives $4M for children's music centre Taylor Swift has taught a generation of kids to appreciate country music over the last five years. Swift's education centre will have its own exterior entrance and is 7,500 square feet-plus spread over two stories. The expansion also would allow the museum to begin new programs and workshops and for teens and senior citizens as well as continuing workshops. She has a long history with the museum. The 22-year-old singer-songwriter is country music's top-selling artist and current ambassador to the world. I was only joking. "For Taylor to want to engage herself in the life of this place in such an appropriate way . pop charts. The new space will house interactive activities such as a musical petting zoo and a "wet" classroom space to make concert posters and other art projects. I was joking we ought to be paying her to do that. Is there a better person out there who's in touch with a young audience? I think not. The new education centre is part of the museum's $75 million "Working on a Building" expansion project that will improve the space more than 200,000 square feet to 350,000. She signed her record contract there. And she has donated her time to the museum's "All For The Hall" fundraisers. "In terms of what it will allow us to do, we do education very well now," museum director Kyle Young said. |

Donna Summer's death: pop mourns singer who transformed dance music
Donna Summer's death: pop mourns singer who transformed dance music
Stars of the music industry rushed to pay tribute to the hugely influential singer, whose tracks included I Feel Love and Hot Stuff. Summer denied making the comments, but was the target of a boycott. She later called the incident a "terrible misunderstanding" and asked for forgiveness. Prayers will be said to keep them strong. Even as disco went out of vogue, her tracks remained a fixture in dance clubs, sampled and remixed into contemporary hits. "A poet once said, 'Life can be a challenge, life can seem impossible, but it's never easy when there's so much on the line. I was asked to create a record by a young pop star recently and the brief I was given was: "Make it sound like I Feel Love. The record was produced by Georgio Moroder, and really it was his vision. She played the part incredibly, so there is no sense in which her contribution can be discounted. For an entire generation - for bands like the Human League - it was so important, and its influence on house music and techno and everything else that followed is immense. Summer's acting career included an appearance in Thank God It's Friday (1978), for which she performed her hit Last Dance. The singer Dionne Warwick expressed her sadness at losing a great performer and "dear friend". It was certainly a key influence on my work with Duran Duran. Sir Elton John released a statement calling for broader recognition for the singer. It was released in 1977, which is a year that's supposed to be so important for punk, but along with Kraftwerk, it was this record that really changed everything. The idea that dance music is about funk and about the groove was stripped away, and instead came something very robotic, this machine-like sound. "That she hasn't been inducted into the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame is a total disgrace, especially when I see the second-rate talent that has been inducted. " Kylie Minogue described her as "one of my earliest musical inspirations". In the early 1980s, experiments with synthesizers and electronic drums carried Summer to new success. Born LaDonna Adrian Gaines, Summer broke into the music business in her early 20s as a backing singer for Three Dog Night. This record is unquestionably one of the most important records in the history of music as we know it today. '" The words are from The Power of One, which Summer recorded as the theme song for Pokémon: The Movie 2000. Madonna tweeted "rest in peace",and linked to a video of herself carrying out a song inspired by Summer's I Feel Love. She is a great friend to me and to the Elton John Aids Foundation and I will miss her greatly. Winner of five Grammy awards, disco queen had a string of hits in the 1970s, including Love to Love You Baby This is the best kind of historically informed performance, one that makes you listen to a familiar work with fresh ears, writes Andrew Clements . Band monkeys around in Merritt for parents, kids
Band monkeys around in Merritt for parents, kids The Monkey Bunch, a Juno-nominated group of children's entertainers, will kick off their first tour in Western Canada with a concert at the Merritt Civic Centre this Tuesday. Peat says that the city wanted to expand its entertainment offerings for kids beyond swimming and hockey. After their foray into the Nicola Valley, The Monkey Bunch will give a series of performances in a series of children's festivals in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. The second stresses the role that young people can play in changing the world. The Monkey Bunch plays mainly rock but its songs are aimed to children along with their parents, generally between preschool age up to Grade 4. Asked why the City of Merritt decided to host a children's concert, Peat says, "There isn't a lot offered to children in this town except activities. The Monkey Bunch was formed in 2006 and consists of band members Shoshana Sperling, Maury LaFoy, Graham Powell, and Lyle Molzan. before. This is their first time. "We thought, 'Let's make it a bit bigger. The group's website explains, "We wanted to create a musical experience that a child could enjoy with a parent or caregiver. To that end, The Monkey Bunch has released two albums, Sho, Mo, and The Monkey Bunch in 2006 and Power to the Little People in 2010. " . "They've never actually been in B. The first pays tribute to the music of artists as varied as The Beatles, Louis Armstrong, and Shirley Temple. Tickets will be sold at the door and are available in advance at the Merritt Civic Centre and Nicola Valley Aquatic Centre. |
Donna Summer
Singer-songwriter Donna Summer, known as the "Queen of Disco," was born on December 31, 1948, in Boston, Massachusetts. Summer's debut performance came one Sunday when she was 10 years old, when a singer scheduled to perform at her church did not show up. "From the time she was little, that's all she really did," her mother recalled. Overcoming her father's initial objections, she accepted the part and flew to Germany with her parents' reluctant approval. From nearly the moment she learned how to talk, Donna sang ceaselessly. "You couldn't see her if you were beyond the third row," her father remembered. It was quite a fantastic moment in my life mer auditioned for and was cast in a production of Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical scheduled to run in Munich, Germany. "She literally lived to sing . ' And I just knew from that day on I was going to be famous. She was also something of a troublemaker as a teenager, sneaking out to parties to circumvent her parents' strictly enforced curfew. Summer attended Jeremiah E. But to everyone's surprise, the voice that bellowed out of Donna Summer's tiny body that Sunday morning was overwhelmingly powerful and beautiful. In 1974, still in Munich, Summer recorded her first solo album, Lady of the Night, which scored a major European hit with the single "The Hostage" but failed to crack the American market. |

400 W. Rich St. to be an 'outlet' for disco, electronic music When Noir attendees enter the warehouse where the event is held, attendees dressed in black will be transported into another dimension in which elaborate visuals and electronic music flow together to mix the old with the new. "It was just an outlet for us to have fun," said Scott Litch, president of Squared. Columbus DJ Aaron Austen agreed. "It will have a 'wow' factor where you walk down a hallway and turn and you see a crazy light stage," Austen said. Litch agreed. "We are trying to do something totally different, take it out of the bar environment and move it into a truly dance-club environment," Litch said. "It was a chance to do what we loved, see who turned out and earn a couple of bucks while having fun," Austen said. Attendees must bring their own alcohol and there will be a check-in for their beverages in a way similar to a coat check. Rich St. Detroit DJs Brian Kage and Luke Hess, and producer Seth Yender are scheduled to perform at the event, which is an official pre-party for the Movement Electronic Music Festival, which is scheduled to run in Detroit May 26-28. Video production artist JR Gualtieri, an OSU alumnus, will be doing the event visuals, which are required to be a main attraction, Litch said. "Let me put it this way, with what we are doing on the video projections, a lot of light would take away from what JR is going to accomplish," Litch said. Attendees are encouraged to wear all black to Noir in an attempt to keep the focus on the party, Litch said. A percentage of the proceeds from the door, concessions and sale of sponsored products will go toward Share Our Strength's No Kid Hungry campaign to end childhood hunger in the United States. Noir will also have giveaways early in the evening. "The idea is to have a gift bag filled with gifts, discounts from local stores and perhaps some swag," Litch said. Run614 is a partner for the event. Austen said the event's goal is to create a dance-club environment that also drops jaws. Austen, owner/operator of Run614 Productions, is also scheduled to perform at Noir in a set with DJ Jason Allen and Ill Atmospherics percussionist Don Carlos. "You check it in and they will either write your name down or give you a number that will correlate with a ticket that they give you to carry," Austen said. Children market chats, handicrafts with aplomb
Children market chats, handicrafts with aplomb It was a perfect children's day out at Rangayana here on Sunday with 'Chinnara Santhe' (children's fair) by camp participants of 'Chinnara Mela' on the go. P Bharat sold in his stall Mangalore bajji, butter biscuits and lemon ginger juice. Muskan N Sheik, daughter of Meharunnisa and Noor Ahmed, studying in third standard at Mahajana's School complains that her father did not buy her bicycle and she would buy one on her own with the money she earns selling jasmine flowers and churmuri. While Shirish of St Mathias school sold lip smacking 'uddina vada' G Ramya of third standard at Kautilya Vidyalaya had mouth watering churmuri to sell along with buttermilk, banana and chocolates. Children would know the interaction and participation in fair which are not much now-a-days," he said. While he appreciated presence of most of the mothers to help their kids, he said probably fathers were resting at home as it was Sunday. While some of them walked around to market their products, others shy were seen sitting in their stalls and selling out products to those who approached them. Jagathi of seventh standard of Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan School along with another camp participant Nisarga of CFTRI School sold golguppas which she likes and says she could nosh on the remaining ones after her sale. Flowers and accessories, chats and juices, handicrafts and decorative items, greens and vegetables, stationaries and games, magazines and papers, junk foods and few healthy ones, the list perhaps would be a long one. Dramatic thieves and entertainers intervened in the fair. As children tried to protect themselves along with their products from robbers, they danced with the entertainers. Director of Rangayana B V Rajaram opined that the fair which has been a continuously organised at 'chinnara mela' makes children creative and they also learn the importance of trade. "Among 350 camp participants about 250 have set up stalls. As Supritha sold salad of sprouted grains at her stall, Anagha of fourth standard of Maharshi School sold sprouted grains' pack. He even said the general public should participate in such a creative event held just once in a year. Nishanth Karyappa of Mahajana's School and Punam of Sacred Heart School of Hubli at their stall had fresh cut fruits and juice to sell. G Vishrutha of sixth standard at Vijaya Vittala School had in her stall decorative items for house completed by her artist mother Indrani. There was even the forgotten barter system in the fair. Few of them even sold coconuts, greens, vegetables and other items for which not much customers were attracted. Vishwas of second standard at DMS |

I'll have a P, please Bob! Blockbusters is back
The gameshow returns tomorrow, the latest 80s television programme to enjoy a revival Kunal Dutta is Home News Reporter at The Independent on Sunday To a generation, it is best remembered for the smirking students who revelled in being on television while asking: "Can I have a P, please Bob?" Tomorrow, Blockbusters returns to television screens nearly 30 years after it was first broadcast in Britain and after an absence of 11 years. A spoof edition once featured Peter Cook impersonating Loyd and looking around Loyd's own home. Now Fremantle, the same firm behind the revival of Blockbusters, have bought the rights for a rescreen. Blind Date Then At the peak of its popularity in the 1980s Blind Date was watched by 17 million viewers. Now Take Me Out was ITV's latest attempt to adapt the original. Surprise Surprise Then: The family reunion show presented by Cilla Black ran for 14 series between May 1984 and September 1997. Four annual specials were produced between 1998 and 2001. Now The production firm DRG is in the process of resurrecting the show having recently secured rights from its US owners. Through the Keyhole Then Hosted by David Frost, the show's format was to take contestants on a video tour ofa famous guest's property. Music Jason Donovan, Bananarama, Pepsi e have passed that stage now. It has brought families back around the television. |
Old time puppets still chart toppers
Old time puppets still chart toppers
That's the way to do it! Forget computer games or flat screen TV's, old fashioned fun is the best way to keep the kids (and the parents) happy. Magician and children's entertainer Brian Gore said the warring couple and the rest of the cast are so popular he is fully booked up throughout the forthcoming Jubilee celebrations. "I am fully booked for the Queen's Jubilee celebrations at quite a few different venues from schools and Samlesbury Hall to care homes as well. Former newsagent Brian became a professional entertainer twenty-five years go and after years of being asked to do puppeting he decided to get his own Punch and Judy family and now has two sets and two puppet booths. "It's really popular with people of all ages. "It was anglicised to Punchinello and hence Punch. And according to entertainers, the puppets are as popular today as ever. "I'm self taught and have replaced the hangman character with a spider routine with Joey the Clown. He said: "I always give a brief history of the origins of Punch and Judy before I start the shows at schools because the children always think he is called Punch because he hits Judy. "In fact, the name originates from the Italian Pulcinello - which was his original name when he was first spotted in Covent Garden by Samuel Pepys in May 1662. Brian said: "Punch and Judy is a popular as ever. ". "It didn't happen up here, though I would say that compared to the computer games they play now Punch and Judy is so tame. "People tried to stop it down south years ago because they said it wasn't politically correct and was too violent. "Kids scream their heads off and the old people enjoy the shows just as much. |

Liza Minnelli's new album is released — 40 years after recording it
Liza Minnelli's new album is released — 40 years after recording it She is known the world over as Liza with a Z, but the L could be for legendary, the I for incredible and the A for amazing. He started out with a nine-month run on Broadway a decade ago in "Beauty and the Beast" with Andrea McArdle and was tapped by Liza to be her opening act when he was just 16. She promises that Saturday's show with her six musicians will be more intimate than we've experienced here before -- and with a lot of different numbers. I hope the next time I get back to Vegas, there will be time so I can do the gypsy midnight shows for all of the other working entertainers on the Strip. He is a genius choreographer, and he choreographed 'Natural Man,' actually. The new tour promotes her long-awaited album "Legends of Broadway: Liza Minnelli Live at the Winter Garden" first recorded in January 1974. It went on sale Tuesday; for the first time, the show is available on CD and DVD. Back in 1974, Liza, then 27, sold out a monthlong run of 24 concerts in just 36 hours, setting a property record for the Winter Garden Theater on Broadway. So to have this come out and be reminded of how it was and how it was received is just lovely. The three new tracks are the standards "It Had to Be You" and "My Shining Hour," plus Stevie Wonder's " You and I. 'It Had to Be You' is just gorgeous, and 'Exactly Like Me' is hilarious. I always feel like I've never done anything. Showbiz always goes around in circles. It really is incredible how it's held up over forty years. It's hard, but I do get to come home in between when I can. I love it. I'd love to do those again. I asked Liza if her voice today was different from the way she sang for this new album back in 1974. When I filled in for her on 'Victor/Victoria,' we had to talk like a man and then sing like a woman. I am one of the few people in the world who came back from that. I talked a lot faster then," she laughed. "It's lower today, but that's it. He is brilliant. He choreographed the whole last show that I did. I wouldn't do it if I didn't love it," she told me on a break from the show's rehearsals in New York. Julie Andrews had the same problem -- actually from the same show. Remember, though, I was laid low for five months with my voice not working. I had nodes. Liza Minnelli's new album is released — 40 years after recording it |

Get in line for some boot scootin' in Abu Dhabi
Get in line for some boot scootin' in Abu Dhabi
There's a long summer ahead of us, and what better way to fill the stifling evenings than with a new hobby? Line dancing may not be the hippest activity around, but, as we found out when we went along to the first of the new fortnightly sessions being held at the Armed Forces Officers Club in Abu Dhabi, it's a lot more fun than it sounds. In fact, say you're going along to a line dancing evening and there will probably be a few raised eyebrows and a wry chuckle. In fact, I had the distinct feeling that many of them were longing to join in. In the end, a few of them did. I may have begun the evening wryly chuckling to myself, but they had me when Moves Like Jagger pumped out of the sound system. I plan on going back in a couple of weeks with a group of friends. The odd kick and hip swing remind us of the dance's cowboy roots. The great thing about it, she adds, is that it is inclusive. "You can be any age, any fitness level. Even my husband, who is usually allergic to dance floors, admitted he was enjoying himself. And next time I'll be certain to bring my cowboy boots. In fact, I had this inane grin spread across my face the whole night. Two steps to the left, clap, two to the right, clap. I wish I had worn cowboy boots. Since the venue is a restaurant (Taverna at the Armed Forces Officers Club) complete with diners, I was worried that I would feel self-conscious boot-scootin' around the room while people ate their nachos. You don't require a partner and it's very sociable, so you can meet people. Tattarakis has lived in Dubai for 29 years and founded The Dubai Liners, the city's only line dancing society, in 1998. There is a small amount of instruction before each number, where Tattarakis takes the group through the moves. OK, I'm wearing the boots and the hat, but line dancing has really changed a lot and several line-dancing clubs now dance to disco music, pop music, Arab music and salsa. She choreographs most of the dances herself. OK, so there are a couple of country numbers, but of the Faith Hill variety instead of the Willie Nelson one. |

Funnyman Fred Penner highlights kids fest
Funnyman Fred Penner highlights kids fest
Fred Penner, one of Canada's most celebrated children's entertainers, committed his life to the world of entertainment when he was just a young man in the early '70s after tragedy struck his family. "What we need to do is really focus on the kids. Having been a pioneer in the industry for forty years, he said children's entertainment has been watered down by businesses looking to make money, rather than working on a philosophy of putting kids first. Penner, who asked that his age not be shared, says he feels like he's 30 years old, based on the life, emotional energy and youthful exuberance he continues to exude. The battles which are raging in every corner of this planet are constant," Penner began, "and the only way, I think, to find a balance in this is through human contact. Moreover to music, there will also be kids crafts, face painting, children's yoga, storytelling and a bouncy castle. "We're in an absolutely messed up world. That's why, he said, events like this weekend's Island Children's Festival, are crucial. "There needs to be a whole new level of commitment of work for children and families. Penner will headline this Saturday's Island Children's Festival at the Island Montessori House School at 5575 W. "Never underestimate your ability to make a difference in the life of a child. |

Lucy in Disguise goes to the Cuckoo Club
Lucy in Disguise goes to the Cuckoo Club Last night The Upcoming's favourite pop-star-turned-fashion-designer Lily Allen and sister Sarah Owen hosted a party to promote their fashion line "Lucy in Disguise" at the Cuckoo Club on Swallow Street, London. The bass-line pounded out but the melody was not lost in the beat and the music made you want get crazy; the remixes were original and new. Music was from Infinity Ink and Miguel Campbell. Our prediction is that Infinity Ink are set to be on the music production scene for a good while yet. The floor was of a geometric design and adorned by a pink tinge and a lot of crazy moves. Infinity Ink did what they do best: an outer-space take on garage, with a twist on underground house. Miguel Campbell stayed true to his roots with house music, famous for producing music via his own record label Outcross; he has a natural talent for developing new and experienced artists and it was great to hear this through the decks. |

Boogie Nights: May the 4th Be With You
Boogie Nights: May the 4th Be With You Like a slinky, the basic concept was pretty simple, but once Boogie Nights was unveiled on what seemed to be a retro-starved public about five years ago, the '70s and '80s themed nightclub took off like Han Solo's Millennium Falcon. . The new Boogie Nights is not merely a much-enlarged version of the original (formerly housed at Resorts). It's going to be going 100 miles per hour. It's something I always needed to do - growing up in New York you'd always see these bright, beautifully graffitied subway trains that I think is very representative of the '70s and '80s. "We'll have DJ Gabor Kiss and DJ Kevin Edge both nights, tag teaming for the opening weekend," says Pena. We also gave it a kind of graffiti edge, as this well-known graffiti artist named AirRat came in and tagged the wall with this big, beautiful Boogie Nights in graffiti that you see when you walk in. "It's exciting - the adrenaline rush has kicked in," says Pena. Both the giant disco ball and the lit-up dance floor it hovers above are much larger than those of the club's predecessor, and besides the numerous homemade retro collages, much of the interior and exterior is totally different. "Everything's done from scratch. It's caught its groove again. It clicked, so everybody's pumped and extremely excited. "Everything's gold in the Solid Gold Room, including gold-framed images of Mr. There's also 'Behind the Glitter Door' - a silver, glittery door above the crowd on a cat walk where we'll have dancers, and surprise guests will pop out randomly from the glittery door, some announced, some unannounced. We'll also allow guests to propose or profess their love for one another from up there if they're so inclined. And (still mired in retro mode), the 30-something Pena is as thrilled as a kid at Christmas. It only took a little bit of time for the gang to get back together, pick up where we left off, and keep the party going. The grand opening will feature Michael Jackson and Madonna impersonators, a performance by '80s pop-star Tiffany (who will also appear May 5), and appearances by original Village People cowboy Randy Jones and Good Times star Jimmy "JJ" Walker, the special guest emcee. Boogie, Roller Girl, the Boogie Beaver, Mirror Man, the Boogie Nights Dancers, the Aerobics Girls, Basketball Jones and others. "People love them," says Pena. |

CHOC Children's celebrates Día del Niño
CHOC Children's celebrates Día del Niño
ORANGE - Hundreds of patients were treated to music, magic and merriment on Monday morning, as part of a three-hour Día del Niño (Day of the Child) celebration held on the CHOC Children's campus. Maria Ramirez of Anaheim and her sons Angel Diaz, 8, and Daniel Diaz, 3, were among those who watched the show. "I want them to come and see a friend, not a phlebotomist," said Serna, of Brea, who also performed magic tricks with the guide of CHOC patients Monday morning. "I think that it's great," said Ramirez, 36, who recalled celebrating Día del Niño in Guanajuato, Mexico as a child. Monday's event was held in honor of Día del Niño, Mexico's April 30 observation of international Children's Day. Serna, originally of Mexico City, said he created Monday's event with the same intent: to make laughter part of the healing process. Serna, who has been with the hospital for four years, worked as a children's entertainer for 14 years before starting at CHOC. They are our future. The event was organized by Jaime Serna, a CHOC phlebotomist who uses magic tricks, toys and a red clown nose to calm his patients' fear of needles. The action unfolded in the lobby of the CHOC Clinics at Orange, a busy facility near the hospital that receives 55,000 visits annually, as families waited to be seen by clinic staff during their standing appointments. "We wanted to ensure that all the kids were happy in the lobby and not afraid when they went into their rooms," said Serna, 44. |
