Party for the Planet aims for a lasting shade of green
Party for the Planet aims for a lasting shade of green It makes total sense, the planet is big so the party to celebrate and help save it need to be, too. Saturday's Party for the Planet agenda is geared toward families with children's entertainers Bobs to educate the community on how to help make their lives greener and to be inspired by work that is already in place. We want to showcase some of our key sustainable initiatives around transportation, waste management, parkland and energy, to name a few. Our community is really doing some incredible things, and it's great to be able to showcase their successes. ". "First and foremost, I want people to have a good time!" said Watts. "And, we want to hear from residents. And, it doesn't take a good deal of effort to make a big difference. |
Home and Lifestyle Show gets bigger, better
Home and Lifestyle Show gets bigger, better This year's Airdrie Home and Lifestyle Show is only a few short days away and already it promises to be bigger and better than last year. To book a space for a child up to the age of six-years-of-age parents can call 403-948-8804 ext. "We thought that the addition of this option for parents would make the show even more family friendly," said Lauer. "This is a new initiative we are trying out this year where children will be watched by qualified Genesis Place childcare professionals. to 3 p. 50. To remedy this problem Lauer noted that they kept most things intact, but added some fun features like a life style demonstration stage where live demos will be held over the course of the two days. They also brought in a collection of new exhibitors including the culinary team from the ATCO Blue Flame Kitchen, Sealwize Alberta, and Secure-Rite Mobile Storage. Admission to the Airdrie Home and Lifestyle show is $5 and also includes admission to the Airdrie Art Show and Sale. Children under 12 years are free when accompanied by an adult. Providing entertainment for our guests is a tradition of ours and one we are proud to provide and this year we've added a few new performers like Monica Munro and SLAM Airdrie. Hoping to bring in more families Lauer also noted that this year childcare will be made available for parents who may want to attend the event but are unable to due so as a result of child care issues. Furthermore to the free seminars and demonstrations guests will also have the chance to take in some of Airdrie's best local talent. "We love the idea of helping to promote local talent at our show," said Lauer. The cost for daycare services will be $4. "This event always draws huge crowds and sometimes moms and dads find it hard to look at everything with little ones tagging along, so this year we decided to provide child care for Saturday only from 9 a. ," said Lauer. "I think one of the biggest challenges we faced this year in planning for this show was trying to strike a balance between tradition and a desire for change," said ACC Events Coordinator Marie Lauer. |

Conquering Caesars
The first time I visited Las Vegas was in the summer of 1979. It was a place where you could easily run into Sinatra and his crowd blowing their paychecks at dice. It was the luxest, plushest, highest rolling operation in Las Vegas that was just beginning to define itself for the coming century. According to David Schwartz, author of the forthcoming book Grandissimo, which chronicles Caesars Palace and its founder Jay Sarno, Caesars heralded the launch of the modern mega casino. But back home in Vegas, 2011 and 2012 mark a serious stepping up for Caesars. Octavius is tricked out with up-to-the-minute technology (including an app for ordering room service, towels and your car), ultra-comfy beds and a private check-in area. Caesars was everybody's joint of choice. Men broke out their tuxedos. A poker room was put in place, the sports book was upgraded and Qua Baths n the business), Harrah's was not exactly famed for its sky-high quality casinos. "Caesars Entertainment Corporation [which is what the Harrah's group has been rechristened] is now a multibillion-dollar gaming company, the largest in the world, and this is their flagship casino," says Schwartz. Everything else in town was a little modern and a little tacky. You drove up the entrance, past the cypress trees, and it felt like you were being transported back on time. It was no longer the brightest star in the desert. Though resonance remained in the name (intentionally spelled without an apostrophe, so as to connote that everyone staying there was a mini Caesar), the property began to seem tatty-especially if you had the misfortune, in recent years, of staying in the rundown Centurion Tower. It seemed like a crummy way for such a classy place to go out. While the old joint maintained its die-hard clients and did what it could to keep up, young gamblers just weren't being drawn there as they had once been. Downstairs near the front desk, the tired coffee shop has been replaced by a 24-hour eatery manned by Michelin-starred chef Michel Richard. Fronted by a wine tower and a cool bar, it handily outdoes other round-the-clock options on the Strip. The effect remained fully there in '79-five years before Sarno would die in a high-roller-suite hot tub, post-coitus with a woman 50 percent his age. Bigger, better, newer casinos sprang up. And for us, there was little question that right there was the eye of the Vegas hurricane. For people with more money and sophistication, Caesars Palace was the ultimate Vegas playground. Female hotel guests wore evening gowns to the shows and the gaming tables. Caesars had fountains, reflecting pools, fantasy glamour. But a young Steve Wynn had interesting thoughts of his own. |

Selena Gomez named Seacrest charity ambassador
Selena Gomez named Seacrest charity ambassador Actress-singer Selena Gomez has been named the first ambassador for the Ryan Seacrest Foundation , which seeks to improve the quality of life for seriously ill and injured children. Such an impact is one of the many reasons Seacrest chose Gomez as his foundation's first celebrity ambassador. According to a release, Gomez will visit new locations featuring "The Voice" and offer inspiration to sick children. " . " . "Selena, no matter what you go through in an indivdual's life, if you have love and family, you're already a superstar," Hwang's family said in a statement. In a heartwarming video that was viewed by millions, Hwang is seen making bracelets for Gomez and thanking her for her incredible visit. "The Ryan Seacrest Foundation does such incredible work and I'm thrilled to be a part of it. Part of the focus of the Seacrest Foundation is to get kids involved in radio and television production by building studios within hospitals. "From the beginning, I could tell that Selena really understood our mission," he said. Back in December, acting on a tip from Seacrest, she visited Hana Hwang — a 13-year-old suffering from an extremely rare genetic condition. " "With her as ambassador, we will continue to expand our programs at children's hospitals throughout the country," added Seacrest. |

Disney - the little cruise line with all the big entertainment
Disney - the little cruise line with all the big entertainment Disney is a small cruise line. Headlining late-night entertainment on the Fantasy are bars with varying themes, all under the umbrella of Europa, and including an Irish pub that doubles as a sports bar. You will find much the same on Dream, but featuring major cities. The atrium and grand stair-case are huge. Okay, dozens. Many popular features from the Disney Dream have been included in the Fantasy, such as the AquaDuck water coaster that floats around the top deck. The Muppets are featured in a game show that sends you searching the ship for clues. Two new ships - the Dream last year and the Fantasy last month - combine to give Disney "imagineers" their biggest floating stage to date. Seeing these ships, with their elongated bows and fake stack, conjures up the steamship liners from the 1920s and '30s. The Fantasy's shows include Wishes (aimed at teens and families) and a theatre production of Aladdin. The kids can look like their favourite princess at Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, a transplant from the parks - $50 for hair and makeup, and much more for clothes. Entertainers from around the world have their own studio, where the shows are rehearsed for weeks, prepping for the next stage of rehearsing in the parks and on the ships. You're paying for the Disney experience, so you need to decide if cruising with part of the famous theme park on your ship is worth the expense. You have to decide if you want to, as they say at Disney, "have a magical day. The Fantasy is sailing seven-day alternating Western and Eastern Caribbean cruises. And Disney is always for the young, or young at heart. Even Karl Holz, President of Disney Cruises, calls his ships "one big stage. With singers such as Jennifer Hudson and Broad-way dancers getting their start on ships, it has become a go-to place for young entertainers to gain experience. Disney Entertainment runs through every phase of the 91-year-old company, founded by two brothers as a cartoon studio. Their works are mixed with Disney animation and song and each kid's (or adult's) drawing comes to life, with some of Disney's biggest characters singing and dancing. You know, top security, waiting to be installed on the Fantasy. Disney - the little cruise line with all the big entertainment |
Laughs for the library
The event, titled All Fool's Night, will get underway at 8 p. A silent auction will also take place during All Fool's Night, which is being sponsored by the Cape Breton Regional Library and the Friends of the McConnell Library. MacDonald said the audience should have a great time and they'll be supporting the library at the same time. "It's going to be an interesting evening. Rosalie Gillis, co-ordinator of community support with the Cape Breton Regional Library, said the event is an important fundraiser for the library. They can read a piece or just do a straight acting piece, they can do a monologue, or a scene. There's also some music. "It'll go toward our bottom line, basically, because we have to increase three per cent of our operating budget every year," she said. "We've basically left it wide open. We gave them a time frame and then left it up to them to choose what they wanted to do. "As more and more things appear online and live online, having a building to walk in to and books to hold in your hand becomes a pretty precious thing," said MacDonald. In addition to hosting the evening, MacDonald and Morrison will be doing some material themselves, bringing fan-favourite characters Martin MacKinnon, Mary Morrison, and Beulah Claxton back to the stage. They will be joined on stage by a talented cast of actors, comedians and performers from the local community including Ken Chisholm, Aaron Corbett, Carolyn Dunn, Tony Hajjar, Todd Hiscock, Paul MacDougall, Stefan MacNeil, Don Munro and Joe Waye. Tickets to All Fool's Night are $25 and can be purchased at the McConnell Library in Sydney or the Cape Breton Curiosity Shop on Charlotte Street. |

Williamsburg Club Owner To Annoyed Neighbors: Just Go Out More Often!
Williamsburg Club Owner To Annoyed Neighbors: Just Go Out More Often! Much to the chagrin of the luxury condo community , Alex Dimitrov, the owner of the "immigrant embassy Balkan disco dive bar extravaganza" Mehanata on the Lower East Side, has plans to open another venue in Williamsburg. Sorry Billyburg, no Bad Buka for you. CB1, no stranger to the war on liquor licensing and outside bars, may possibly have some sway over the ultimate decision, but Dimitrov is ardently defending his business plan, telling Brooklyn Paper that the locals worried about his club that "this is a commercial area, and when you bought your home you took chance. And Dimitrov insists da club will cater to a more laid back Williamsburg crowd. Dimitrov's requested liquor license for the venue has been denied by Community Board 1's liquor license committee but is waiting for the full board vote on April 17. The current warehouse space of the to-be Williamsburg Manor on 60 North 1st Street is intended to be a dreamy performance and party venue complete with a public rooftop garden (you know, for the community). " Yeah, that ought to win them over. Williamsburg Club Owner To Annoyed Neighbors: Just Go Out More Often! |

Cirque's Michael Jackson show aims to be a thriller
Cirque's Michael Jackson show aims to be a thriller PITTSBURGH -- If anyone's life befits celebration with a circus, it's Michael Jackson's. Obviously, the show targets Jackson's enormous fan base. You've never seen moon-walking or crotch-grabbing like this. "We're getting great feedback," Cirque du Soleil publicist Maxime Charbonneau said last week hours before the first of three Madison Square Garden dates. "We hope to be able to share all of Michael's messages about love, peace and unity," Charbonneau said. Props include an 8-foot-long model of Jackson's penny loafers and a 6-foot-tall version of his signature sequined glove, both operated by dancers. To recreate Jackson's iconic dance moves, Cirque performers were guided by "Immortal" director Jamie King and choreographer Travis Payne. "Ben," "Beat It," "I'll Be There," "Man in the Mirror" and a mega-medley of other Jackson hits also are put to motion on a stage that extends into the audience, equipped with a conveyor belt. After a performance today on Long Island, and two this week in Philadelphia, "Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour" will beat it to Pittsburgh for shows Friday through April 15 at the Petersen Events Center. A Variety magazine review of a January show in Los Angeles said fans were moved by the experience, "but there's something deeply creepy about the ghostlike Jackson seeming to speak from beyond the grave. An international cast of 60 entertainers fuse dance, music, visuals and surreal stunts, all driven by Jackson's voice. Sony Music and Jackson's estate gave Cirque access to the singer's master recordings. That's the beauty of Michael Jackson's music, it touches everybody; young, old, black, white. "This is different than our big-top shows or arena shows," Charbonneau said. In another scene dancers and acrobats in tribal costumes "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'," and they do, with a high-flying routine. Performers duplicate Jackson's famous leaning motion as seen in the "Smooth Criminal" video, later stomping and stalking around a graveyard dressed like mummies during "Thriller. The "Immortal" storyline aims to offer passage to Jackson's inner world influenced by a love of music and dance, fairy tale and magic, and the delicate beauty of nature. |
Lagos' festival of colours Colourful fun at Freedom Park
Lagos' festival of colours Colourful fun at Freedom Park
The opening days of the 2012 Lagos Black Heritage Festival which ends tomorrow with a carnival, were not bereft of entertainment. "Ninu osupa, a nse ere osupa" meaning we are playing moon songs under the moon, Solanke said in reference to the bright moon illuminating the park. Author of the poetry collection, 'I am Memory', Jumoke Verissimo, was the first act of the night. Uche Peter Umez, one of the writers shortlisted for the 2011 Nigeria Prize for Literature read 'Prose in Flight' while author of 'A Love like a Woman's and Other Stories', Razinat Mohammed, read 'Dancing in Church'. The second sets of poems were taken after a musical interlude with Richard Ali who read 'Beneath the Wind' starting. The keynote speaker, Professor Alessandro Portelli of University of Rome La Sapienza, Italy thereafter spoke on 'Olaudah Equiano and the Mediterranean'. Portelli also described Equiano as the founder of the tradition of slave narratives and that the book is several books in one. The Nobel Laureate also touched on the venue of the festival, the old prison turned Freedom Park, noting that a former place of agony has become "a creative space. Alessandra Di Maio of the University of Palermo, Italy, who coordinated the symposium with Dr. "It is a life changing experience to help organise the colloquium, it is a dream come true. I am thrilled that my first visit to Africa should take place in this exciting context," she said. This is the fifth year of the festival but this is the third year I have been working alongside Professor Soyinka, the festival consultant. It's not easy but we pulled it off and I'm sure it's going to get better next year. Inimitable singer and storyteller, Jimi Solanke set people in a relaxed mood before the poets took the floor with some of his evergreen songs including 'Baba Agba' and 'Bareni Joye'. The late poet and dancer, Ify Agu-Omalicha who passed on last month but had earlier submitted her poem for the proposed collection of poems to be published by Bankole Olayebi's Book Craft was loudly celebrated on the night. He later explained why he did so, noting that Verissimo had been scheduled to comment on the departed poet and dancer. The Governor was thereafter taken on a tour of the performances and the venue by Holloway, Soyinka and coordinators of the various activities of the festival. Fashola saw a parade of the masquerades and also inaugurated the Kongi's Harvest Art Gallery, dedicated to Soyinka for his excellent contributions to the arts. Though Italian poets were also supposed to read, only one, Cristina Ali Farah made it to Nigeria. Writers Lola Shoneyin and Ayodele Olofintuade showed that writing is not all they are about while choreographer, Badejo displayed many of the steps that made the Queen award him the Officer of the British Empire Award. Another musical interlude preceded the last sets of reading during which some guests showed off their dancing skills. "I don't think Ify would want us to be sad, she would want to be celebrated," noted Verissimo who added that Omalicha "was not only beautiful outside, she was beautiful inside. "She is one dancer whose memory will live on in the University of Ibadan," said Verissimo who then requested guests to celebrate Omalicha with a round of applause. The renowned dancer also touched on the uniqueness of the fifth edition of the festival, explaining the differences this way: "You are dealing with a consultant that is brilliant, that is very creative as you all know. The programme commenced promptly at the advertised time of 10am with the arrival of Governor Fashola. ". He acknowledged participating states, saying, "I thank you very much for adding a lot more colour, a lot more verve to the 2012 edition of the Heritage Week which also signals the beginning of our tourisism week that climaxes on Monday with the carnival; that builds up with the boat regatta, that adds the spice of the beauty pageant . By appropriating the ideology and practice of the bourgeois revolution – individual rights, social mobility, economic accumulation, free trade – the former commodity Olaudah Equiano places himself at the cutting edge of the revolutionary thought of his time. Songbirds of the nightThe symposium continued on day two of the festival with another keynote and panel discussions. Themed 'Black Mediterranean: The Afro-Italian Connections', the reading and performances segment of the festival featured 16 Nigerian and 16 Italian poets. We got out of that formality that people are used to, this is a whole new way, a brand new approach that the consultant is working on. Olaudah Equiano's narrativesEntertainment, however, was not the only dish served on the opening day of the festival. Coordinator of the event, Dr. Soyinka noted that the Italian participants undertook an epical journey not necessarily in terms of distance but because of that "ridiculous document called visa. " He described the bottlenecks associated with the issuance of visas as "stupidity among nations. The Amuludun Traditional Band which brought the Agboremireke Masquerade; Fame Agere Troupe and its Agere masquerades; Lebe Masquerades from Osun State, Mabo masquerades from Cross River State and Igunuko masquerades were some of the ' ancestors' that came to celebrate with the earthlings. "It was not easy but as they say, practice makes perfection," began choreographer Peter Badejo, the man responsible for arranging the colourful parade of masquerades and dances when asked how he pulled it off. He had no choice than to applaud them when he eventually left the young ones. Equiano, he noted, did some anthropological and analytical analyses of Mediterranean countries including Spain, Italy and Turkey he visited and that a recurrent theme in his description of the Mediterranean is the abundance of cheap fruits. Portelli noted further that Equiano threw veiled insults at his British captors by highlighting the honesty of the Turks but the dishonesty of the British who promised to release him but later reneged. The issue of the 'talking book' (reading) which Equiano was hitherto unfamiliar with and his businessacumen were also touched on by Portell. |

How Basketmouth, Flavour, Others Dazzled At Legend Real Deal Nite
The ambience of the night club was indeed electrifying as the in-house live band did an impressive job of whetting the appetite of the audience before the stars of the night took to stage. Palm Coast: Flagler County set to music
Palm Coast: Flagler County set to music
If you hang around Flagler Beach much you could have noticed one of our most endearing locals — Capt. " After trying to return to work, Nick realized that retirement was imminent. After exploring the Atlantic Coast from New Smyrna Beach northward, Flagler Beach felt like home for him and his wife, and they've been here ever since, singing and playing. "In the '90s I was playing at Burrell's Place — a spot where the locals hung out in the mountains of South Carolina. So I picked up that guitar and took over the show — for four hours straight. In 2005, Nick ended up with some health problems that forced him to think about retirement. Nick knows firsthand that you've got to make what you can of life, travel over the tough spots and keep on going. Before I knew what happened, the head of the act was rushed to the hospital with his wife, who was also part of the band, and I was left standing there alone. " Nick recalls. And so he writes about the place he calls home and all the people that make it special as he lives out his dream. It was during the navy years that he first picked up a banjo and started strumming. He often traded lessons with his musical friends. A cut finger caused him to put aside his musical interests for a while. That's when I realized that I could do a show on my own and from that point on, that's what I did whenever I could. People thrive on hearing about themselves — where they live, what they do and what they love. After the navy, he found himself settling a bit further south in South Carolina where it all fell into place. "I remember it was a Tuesday night and I was playing the guitar. Capt. Inspired by Jimmy Buffet and other great entertainers, he plays and sings from his heart. You might have heard him at BeachHouse Beanery, where he is a regular part of the entertainment or at one of the monthly First Friday events held in Flagler Beach. . |

You'll be glad to hear that our ramshackle Louisiana style Swamp Shack returns for a second year, after being voted one of the highlights of Bestival 2011! Once again there's an incredible music line-up at night including a few of the UK's hottest emerging acts like Jess Mills, Clean Bandit, The Correspondents and Kill It Kid. Favorites from last year, Boom Boom Club are bringing us a new, Coney Island inspired, showcase of deliriously twisted cabaret freaks, geeks and misplaced spirits from the lost age of the fairground. All powered by the sun! Amazing. Brand new to Bestival this year and situated in the Ballroom Field is Mazy's Art Club helping you to get back to your creative roots. Drop in and get into printmaking or giant origami; making anything from pin badges and mosaics to feathered headbands. Staying on a creative tip, if you head down to the Wishing Tree in the afternoons, you can join in the Spread the Love project with super talented folk Craftinoon Tea. Bestival wouldn't be the same without our two much loved institutions the Knees Up Tent and Time for Tease. For an eclectic and reckless party, with anything from world street vibes to comedy to plenty of gin fuelled sing-alongs with Underbling and Vow, then join the revellers in the ever energetic Knees Up Tent. Plus Rob da Bank favourite Fake Bush will also be gracing the stage with her unmissable renditions of our favourite Kate Bush songs. We've cranked up the fun factor just a little bit more to present a new Bestival venue; the Grand Palace of Entertainment. Continuing the poetry offerings, we're welcoming Tongue Fu, which features spoken word artists performing alongside a live band in a unique and compelling union and Bestival Limings, who fuse a carnival and party-loving vibe into a spoken work format to Bestival for the first time this year. During the day you can sing your heart out with alternative karaoke kings, Hot Breath Karaoke, or test your musical prowess with the ever popular, Sounds Familiar Music Quiz. We'll also be throwing a retro style Daily Birthday Party each afternoon, where everybody who will be celebrating their special day (plus guests!) can gather to regress to the good old days of musical bumps and pass the parcel. In the evening, we'll be presenting a very special selection of the UK's best in alternative cabaret. To keep you on your toes while you're exploring the many wonders of Bestival we are also adding even more musical acts for your pleasure, including twitchy blissful beats from Jamie xx, beguiling bass from Julio Bashmore, and cut-up party anarchy from The Nextmen, plus there will be sets from B Traits, Leo Zero, Evian Christ, Reggae Roast, Frank Tope, Rev Milo Speedwagon, Pathann, DJ Cable, Foamo, George B, and Sink The Pink who is taking things late into the night at the Grand Palace of Entertainment. Live sets can come courtesy of Barcelona's, Pitchfork approved, John Talabot, wistful elfin singer-songwriter Lucy Rose, Bristolian, by way of Chicago, bluesman Jamie N Commons, woozy Warp signing Kwes, and erstwhile Tuung man Sam Genders in his Diagrams guise. The Ambient Forest is also back with a treasure trove of enchantments to lose your self in. Spidora is a dark yet delightful immersive theatrical sideshow presented by Copperdollar and The Peoples Front Room is a 19th Century Salon of creativity, artistry and performance all combined in a strangely familiar yet surreal environment. Longstanding Bristol institution Hoochie Coochie Kabaret will be bringing their world of trashy and surreal entertainment to the Grand Palace, while drag queen legend Jonny Woo will be whipping us into a frenzy with his Gay Bingo and Lipsyncing mayhem. The 'Chambermaid of Festivals Past' may well tuck you up during your worst nightmares. You can make your bed and 'Rest In Peace' in it in our funeral parlour or find bed-wear 'to die for' in the dressing down cupboard. Be certain to take an hour out of watching the artists and become one yourself. A certified Bestival treasure, Club Dada will be a four-day marathon of mentalness featuring DJ Tofu's welcome home, The Electro Swing Club, the Night of 1000 Beat Boxers and Breakin Brass. We've got even more to add to the already jam-packed line-up on our brand new Amphitheatre Stage, set deep in the heart of the Ambient Forest. Completing our already announced line-up of comedy theatre on the Amphitheatre Stage, Guilt and Shame present their brand new depraved show Night of Seduction and on a slightly less debauched note, Eye Brow Productions present Collision, four hilarious and thought-provoking new short plays about surviving physics, testing love, and time travel. Peppered between the big tops and tucked into secret corners are a host of delightful sideshows and micro venues to discover. If you have a taste for the macabre then you'll be welcome at the Slumbarave, an irresistibly twisted, spooky hotel. Keep your bed tidy and the pillow fights tight, get your straightjacket pyjamas on and ensure the bed bugs don't bite. |

Raven's Grand Opening Bash: The Folsom corridor between 7th and 8th has added another cool bar to its ranks. Raven has two personalities in its two stories: the downstairs is a charming craft-cocktail bar with a hip, speakeasy vibe, while the upper level is a high-energy dance club, complete with disco ball. To celebrate their grand opening, the Raven folks are throwing a party, with complimentary Tres Agaves tequila cocktails, appetizers, and a DJ spinning. Admission is free, but space is limited; RSVP here to get on the list. (Thursday, April 5, 6-8 pm, at Raven, 1151 Folsom St., SOMA.) The Unresolved Love Life of Evelyn Lee Opens: As bar names go, they do not get stranger than The Unresolved Love Life of Evelyn Lee, which is named for either a friend of the owners or the 1860s-era madam of an SF brothel, depending on your source. (Hopefully not both.) But while the name may be weird, this spot from the folks behind Thieves Tavern and Dear Mom is a classic dive, with draft beers, cocktails, flat-screen TVs, and pinball. We'll drink to that. (Daily, 5 pm-2 am, 491 Potrero Ave., Mission.) Johnnie Walker Private Whisky Tastings: Only a few months after their last SF sojourn, Johnnie Walker is back in town for another evening of education and free whisky sampling with one of the brand's Masters of Whisky. Many of the tastings have already been booked up, but we're told there's still space in the 9 pm tastings tonight and Thursday, as well as the 10 pm tasting on Saturday night. (Free whisky is harder than it looks.) Head over to their website to book your spot. (Wednesday, April 4, 9 pm; Thursday, April 5, 9 pm; Saturday, April 7, 10 pm, at Fort Mason Center, Landmark Building A, Marina.) Blow Pop Happy Hour: No plans tonight? Consider swinging by Blowfish sushi for their monthly musical happy hour, with Vetiver taking over the decks to spin their favorite songs. Throw in a couple of $6 Stoli specialty cocktails and some sushi, and you'll be fortified to tackle the rest of the week. RSVP here to get in. (Wednesday, April 4, 6-9 pm, at Blowfish Sushi to Die For, 2170 Bryant St., Mission.) |

Bert's is crankin': Eastern Market jazz club turned into entertainment complex
Bert's is crankin': Eastern Market jazz club turned into entertainment complex
When veteran record firm executive Miller London moved back to Detroit in 2010 after decades in Los Angeles and New York, he was ready to wind down a bit. (Boxing matches are planned for the warehouse. Russell Street Entertainment has already hosted several big name concerts in the warehouse; soul singer Chuck Jackson on Thanksgiving weekend, and L. Reynolds of the Dramatics for two days in January. Bert Dearing has operated many nightspots through the years, as well as a party store and assorted real estate, mostly on the east side. The next big event will be the "Ice Man," soul singer Jerry Butler on May 12, the day before Mother's Day. "Our goal is to make that an event for people to bring their mothers and grandmothers to, who were part of the Jerry Butler era," London says. Dearing, London and Gibson are upbeat about Detroit's prospects, especially the Eastern Market area. All of this activity will require a lot of staff er right corner of the post to report it. When veteran record firm executive Miller London moved back to Detroit in 2010 after decades in Los Angeles and New York, he was ready to wind down a bit. . Next to that is the slightly larger Hastings Street Room, as well as a fully equipped barbershop and ladies' salon and spa. The big warehouse in the back, dubbed Bert's Warehouse Theater, is now in play for larger concerts, along with film and TV productions and stage plays. Set up nightclub style, with round tables and waiter and waitress service, the warehouse theater can seat 900-1,000 patrons, although without tables it could hold up to 1,700. "The other venues, you have to hold your food on your lap, put your drink on the floor or in a cup holder," London says. During football season, the parking lot behind the warehouse bustles with tailgaters, and the exterior grills are sizzling with meat until it's too cold to put them out. They are seeking scripts, as well as investors. Dearing's film will center on Hastings Street, Detroit's frenetic black entertainment district of the 1950s, and will feature interviews with entertainers such as Lottie the Body. "Pimps, murphy guys, prostitutes, the whole environs of Hastings Street," Dearing says. Over the years Dearing has amassed a slew of photographs and paraphernalia for a documentary that will be Paradise Valley Productions' first project. "There will never be another company like Motown," London says. We'll just take the brand and the mold that was created by Motown, and add to it. Dearing of course is a longtime force in Detroit's live music scene. The footprint of Bert's Market Place has slowly crept down the block since he bought the bar in 1987. The three are firming up two big prominent acts for June, two for July, and a "blue-eyed soul" artist they're very excited about for August. The Motown Room, which Dearing had already decked out with framed photos of Motown stars and posters of Marvin Gaye and other greats, now features a slew of gold and platinum records that came from London's personal collection. In pride of place in the Motown Room, over the bar, is a photograph of Berry Gordy in his boxing days, opposite a photo of Joe Louis. Ill teen to miss date with Taylor Swift
Ill teen to miss date with Taylor Swift In his second bout with cancer, 18-year-old Kevin McGuire won over the Internet and Taylor Swift. The 22-year-old Swift had provided for McGuire to have a tuxedo and shoes, airfare for him and his family, and hotel accommodations to attend the awards show. The country music event's reigning Entertainer of the Year, Swift is scheduled to present an award and is nominated for Entertainer of the Year and Female Vocalist of the Year. McGuire has been cautious leading up to the event, declining a visit to the mall for fear of getting sick and even guaranteeing doctors had washed their hands before visiting him, his mother said. "He said to me, 'Well, how many people get to say they turned down Taylor Swift?' " said Vicki McGuire with a small laugh. Though his cancer has been in remission, Kevin McGuire — who last spoke with the Courier-Post Thursday afternoon — said he was coming off his most intense week of chemotherapy ever: five days of radiation, five hours each. "His immune system is compromised," the Somerdale resident said. McGuire, who was first diagnosed with cancer as a 13-year-old, thought he had defeated the illness in 2010. , from accompanying the superstar to Sunday night's Academy of Country Music Awards. Hours after being in "great spirits" Thursday, and a day before his planned departure to Las Vegas for the show, McGuire was dealt a 103-degree fever and taken to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, according to his mother, Vicki McGuire. McGuire told the Courier-Post Thursday afternoon: "I've been living day by day, but mainly this past couple weeks I've been doing the best I can to not get sick, or mess up. McGuire's cousin Nicole Durand said the 25 hours of chemotherapy had weakened his immune system, preventing room visits for much of this week. A call to Swift's publicist, Paula Erickson, was not returned as of Friday evening. It was at this Philadelphia hospital where Kevin McGuire and his older sister Victoria drew the sympathies of thousands through the formation of the Facebook page "Taylor Swift take KEVIN MCGUIRE TO PROM!" The page has more than 128,000 followers, including Swift, who responded to Kevin on her Facebook page: "Kevin, I'm so sorry but I will not be able to make it to your prom," the singer wrote. Fever aside, counts of blood cells and hemoglobin need to be strong for McGuire to make Saturday's 2,500-mile trip to Las Vegas, site of the Academy of Country Music Awards, Kevin McGuire said Thursday. "I am excited," McGuire said Thursday, "but I'm trying to prepare myself in case my counts are too low. He remained in the hospital Saturday, and his sister Victoria posted this message on the "Taylor Swift take KEVIN MCGUIRE TO PROM!" Facebook page: "I am so sorry to announce this devastating news, but Kevin was admitted to the hospital last night, and is unable to attend the Academy of Country Music Awards with Taylor Swift. … Please continue to pray for Kevin and his health, because that is the most important thing. |
